The Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin has launched a new platform for discourse featuring pop-up exhibitions, lectures, workshops and panel discussions, with the aim of exploring the concept of ‘more than human’ from the perspective of the creative disciplines, particularly design. In parallel, a speculative cabinet of curiosities is taking shape, which will also incorporate previously overlooked contributions from non-human actors.

“More than human” encompasses a spectrum of transdisciplinary theories and approaches that challenge anthropocentric perspectives and call for a paradigm shift towards a deeper interconnectedness between humans and the environment. The American feminist scholar Donna Haraway introduced the term ‘Natureculture’ into the discourse to highlight the existing interconnections between human and non-human species on our planet. The dissolution of the boundaries between nature and culture simultaneously requires new ways of thinking regarding power and agency, difference and communality, atmospheres and epistemology.

‘More than human’ reflects a growing awareness of the need to incorporate not only the needs of humans alone, but also the needs of other species such as plants, animals, insects, microorganisms or entire ecosystems into responsible design, research and innovation processes.
