MUSICAL WORKS BY VISUAL ARTISTS
A series of events featuring performances of
musical works and compositions by visual artists
The series ‘Musical Works by Visual Artists’ presents musical works by artists who are internationally renowned as visual artists, but whose musical works and compositions are rarely heard. For the participating artists, the connection between visual art and music, between visual and auditory experience, is an integral part of their artistic practice. Crossing boundaries and structural transpositions play an equallyo eine Rolle wie die Hervorbringung von Dissonanzen und Kontrapunkten.

Since the very beginning of the activities of the Freunde Guter Musik Berlin, thematic work at the intersection of music and the visual arts has been a key focus of the association’s programme. As early as 1983, the year of its foundation, the association was invited to devise the supporting programme for Harald Szeemann’s Berlin exhibition ‘Der Hang zum Gesamtkunstwerk’; On the occasion of the association’s 10th anniversary in 1993, several major projects were realised as part of the supporting programme for Christos Joachimides’ exhibition ‘American Art in the 20th Century’ in Berlin, including John Cage’s highly acclaimed sound installation ‘Writings through the Essay: On the Duty of Civil Disobedience (Henry David Thoreau)’.

Since 1997, there has been a regular collaboration with the Nationalgalerie at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin. In addition to individual events, an extensive supporting programme was organised in 1998/99 to accompany the exhibition ‘Sensation’, featuring young British artists and musicians. In collaboration with the Nationalgalerie and other partners, the event series “Musikwerke Bildender Künstler” (Musical Works by Visual Artists), which has been running since 1999, has presented musical works and installations by: Hanne Darboven, Yves Klein, Hermann Nitsch, Rodney Graham, Stephen Prina, Lawrence Weiner / Peter Gordon, Christian Marclay, Käthe Kruse, Carsten Nicolai, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Cory Arcangel, Egill Sæbjörnsson & Marcia Moraes, Ryoji Ikeda and Susan Philipsz.
